Civil rights hard at work’

The federal law, in the amendment “No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person “privileges as whites, and no laws will be made to continue segregation.
Gandhi spoke himself “I object to violence because when it appears to do well, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent” –Gandhi. He means that he disagrees with violence in protest. When people think it does well, it’s not for long. More violent protest will continue. The evil in the violence stays forever. And will never be forgotten.
In Dallas County only 1% of African Americans were allowed to vote, because African Americans had to take a test to register to vote and had to answer questions like how many jelly beans were in a jar? But whites could vote with no test. All whites had to do was sign a form. This is segregation, a sad time in American history. Segregation is unfair rights for African Americans. African Americans were treated unfairly and poorly. It’s not just I get to sit anywhere I want on the bus hooray! It’s not that simple, there’s a whole bunch of other protesters.
There’s danger in protesting. Protesting is when citizens protest laws, actions, or American Government decisions. And the South was actually violating the 14th amendment. African Americans didn’t get equal rights. White people were violating the federal law that all residents of The United States of America have to follow. African Americans had to pay the same amount of taxes as white people, but little or no money they paid of taxes went to them. The money went to white causes. Black schools had little money. They couldn’t afford books or desk. But white schools had books galore. They had nice things and there just using all they’re sweet money on things they want not need. And African Americans have to learn with barely anything. Almost no any of the money goes to African Americans sake. African Americans hated there lifestyle, living poor and unfairly. All the wanted was to live the same as whites and fairly. They felt so strongly they will fight.
The Freedom Riders are a group of African Americans and whites on the same bus all traveling to the South. They would all travel to the South, days and nights to reach their destination. The Freedom riders goal is to stop segregation and to get attention. The Freedom riders goal was to get attention so the president would end segregation and find out what was really happening in the South. Newspapers and radios soon were all over them taking notes too add to their work. On their stop in Alabama the Freedom Riders bus was attacked by residents of the town. The people flattened tires on the bus and made an explosion on the bus. The Freedom Riders escaped coughing and hurt. Whites kept hitting the Freedom Riders. Some managed to escape. The Freedom Riders did what they did because they believe in what they believe in so strongly they will fight.

There are a lot of peaceful protesters but one very important protester is the Greensboro 4, peacefully protest segregation. In the 1950’s diners had lunch counters. It is fairly common that diners had them. A lunch counter is a long narrow counter located in diners, with stools along them. Only whites were allowed to sit at them. The Greensboro 4 is a group of 4 African Americans, and they sat at the seats by the counter, violating the diner’s rules. The diner, in which the boys violated the rules at, was called Woolworths. Their protest affected Woolworths because the protesters and other protesters sat in all the seats of the counter occupying all the seats. The servers of the lunch counter dined to serve to the protesters. In the time of them sitting in the lunch counter Woolworths made no money. After six whole months of sitting at the counter the diner finally gave up and made African Americans and whites sit at the counter together. The Greensboro 4 started protesting on February 1st. The news spread quickly about the Greensboro 4. In just 6 days 1,000 people from all over the U.S were protesting. The group inspired a whole bunch of people. The Greensboro 4 was brave for their act they fought for what they believed in peacefully.
“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you have to do keep moving forward”- Martian Luther King Jr. This has to do with the march in Selma, Alabama. The March objective was to allow the conditional right to vote for African American. Only 2% of African Americans in Dallas County were able to vote. That concludes why Martian Luther King Jr. is holding the march in Selma, Alabama. MLK tried two other marches in other location around the country. But they failed, but Martin Luther King Jr. will not give up until we all have the right to vote. From Selma to Montgomery the march took place in the year 1965. The protesters marched 54 miles from Selma to Montgomery. Approximately 3,000 protesters were arrested during the march. The protesters sang freedom songs because and show how unfair segregation is... President Johnson ordered 2,000 soldiers to protect the marchers. 3,000 protesters left Selma on March 21, 1965. 4 days later 25,000 protesters entered the capital city for the voting rights. Martian Luther King Jr. Inspired 25,00o other people to protest. That shows just how powerful Martian Luther King Jr is.
Satyagraha is a peaceful protest organized by Gandhi, a peacemaker. Satyagraha means holding firmly to the truth. Firmly means committed in this case. So I think he chose this type of protest because he wanted a peaceful protest for example “Gandhi used it (the Satyagraha protest) to represent his form of non-violence protest” according to a Gandhi biography. Also because Gandhi was born in a peaceful family called Hindu, he told Indians in South Africa not to follow injustice and accept punishment like jail. He wanted to show the government that the protesters were willing to go to jail at all costs. “Eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind”- bible. It basically means that if someone hurts you hurt them back. But that is not how Gandhi does it. He would rather do it peacefully. Gandhi wanted publicity as well. If he did violent it would be bad publicity. But if he did non-violence it would have greater publicity and wouldn’t change anything. “I don’t believe in violence because the good it does is temporary. But the bad it does is permanent” – Gandhi. so it basically means his protests with Satyagraha. Gandhi inspired Marten Luther King Jr. with his peaceful protest. He protest segregation in America but Gandhi protested freedom in south Africa. It takes time to be free all you have to do is fight.
“White people may demand our respect, but what we give them is not respect but fear. What we give to our own people is far more important because it’s given freely” Big Ma from Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry. She means that white people want respect from African Americans. They might hurt them for respect and possibly kill if you don’t follow there rules. That explains why segregation is so violent. For instance, TJ a character in Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry was forced to steal from the Wallace Store. And just because two stupid boys, white men hit him and try to hang him for what he was threated to do. He survived but in a lot of these cases is unlikely. He left with broken ribs and a broken jaw. Also prosecuted to murder of Mr. Wallace even though he didn’t do it. This is how much control whites have over African Americans. Segregation happens all over the South even to this family.
